Oil Removal of industrial wastewater: what it is and what it is for

Climate change is forcing industries to reconsider their use of water, especially industrial wastewater.

These are waters that cannot be reused, but can be treated through the oil removal.

What does oil removal of industrial wastewater mean and what is the treatment of these fluids on industrial sites?

Let’s find out together.

What is meant by deoiling of waste water

Specifically, by deoiling of waste water we mean the separation, or removal, of fats and oils from water.

At this point let’s take a step back and understand what wastewater is. It is waste and waste water produced by plants in which commercial activities or production of goods are carried out.

Industrial wastewater contains high concentrations of contaminants such as mineral oils. For this reason they must be purified.

How?

Through the oil removal treatment, which allows floating materials to be separated from polluted water.

Specifically, it consists of a mechanical operation. This is an indispensable action in the treatment of wastewater, because oily substances can interfere in the primary sedimentation tanks used for purification.

This procedure consists in removing :

  • oils
  • fat

What are the sectors where industrial oil removal is performed

The sectors of use of industrial deoiling are numerous and vast.

In particular, they concern all those activities that need to eliminate oil from water:

  • refineries
  • companies that deal with the washing of mechanical parts
  • painting lines
  • mechanical workshops
  • steel mills
  • food industries

Tecniplant: API, CPI and flotation units for wastewater oil removal

within our range dedicated to oil and water separation systems, we have various solutions for deoiling water waste:

  • API separators
  • CPI separators
  • Flotators

Our products for oil water separation are gravimetric separators. They are among the most efficient systems for the removal of oil and suspended solids in water, after their use the oil content can be reduced up to 95%.

Specifically, API separators are the ideal solutions for treating oily wastewater, their installation requires large room available.

They are used for a preliminary water treatment before the flotation process. The velocity of the fluid inside the separator is extremely slow.

The CPI separators, on the other hand, are lamellar pack separators that can be used in the treatment of oily waters before the flotation units.

One of the characteristics that distinguishes them from API separators is the ability to separate oily globules with a diameter smaller than 150 microns from water.

Within our solutions there are also floaters. They are efficient systems for the continuous removal of oils and suspended solids from water.

Specifically, they are secondary treatments to be installed after the API separator or the CPI separator. Within our catalog you can find two types of flotators:

  • Induced Air/Gas (IAF/IGF)
  • Air/Dissolved Gas (DAF/DGF).
