class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-af3b02f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"af3b02f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Ballast waters, are used to <strong>regulate<\/strong> the <strong>distribution<\/strong> and <strong>overall weight<\/strong> of the <strong>vessel<\/strong>.<br \/>In other words, it is the water stored in the ship&#8217;s hull in order to <strong>keep<\/strong> the <strong>vessel<\/strong> upright and in a <strong>safe<\/strong> and <strong>stable condition<\/strong>.<\/p><p><strong>Additionally<\/strong>, it can also be used to <strong>increase<\/strong> cargo weight so that a ship can lower itself to pass under bridges and other structures.<\/p><p>When the ship <strong>reaches<\/strong> its <strong>destination<\/strong>, the hull is emptied and the ballast is <strong>released<\/strong> into the port water.<\/p><p>In the worst case scenario, when the <strong>ballast<\/strong> is <strong>released<\/strong> in the destination <strong>waters, it may happen that mixtures of foreign organisms are created which are potentially harmful<\/strong> to the marine ecosystem of the individual ports.<\/p><p>In fact, ships regularly unload and load ballast water when they dock in different places, coming into contact with maritime ecosystems in different geographical areas.<\/p><p>For this reason, in 2004 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/it\/politica-estera-e-cooperazione-allo-sviluppo\/organizzazioni_internazionali\/imo-organizzazione-marittima-internazionale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>the International Maritime Organization <\/strong><\/a><strong>(IMO) <\/strong>defined the rules for the <strong>management<\/strong> of <strong>ballast water in a convention<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-78411cf elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"78411cf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" id=\"realizzazione\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How ballast water is managed <\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2a60c42 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2a60c42\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Arrived at this point, we understand <strong>how these waters are managed<\/strong> and what are the <strong>regulations<\/strong> governing <strong>them<\/strong>.<\/p><p>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imo.org\/en\/MediaCentre\/HotTopics\/Pages\/Implementing-the-BWM-Convention.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ballast Water Management Convention<\/a> (BWMC)<\/strong>, i.e. an ad hoc Convention which requires <strong>all <\/strong>ships to adopt a <strong>particular treatment<\/strong> of these <strong>waters<\/strong>.<\/p><p>The <strong>plan<\/strong> established by the BWMC must be <strong>specific to each vessel<\/strong> and must be <strong>included<\/strong> in the <strong>ship<\/strong>&#8216;s operational <strong>documentation<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Furthermore, ports must guarantee <strong>the<\/strong> presence of <strong>appropriate<\/strong> <strong>treatment<\/strong> <strong>structures<\/strong> and devices for <strong>safe management<\/strong>, from the environmental point of view.<\/p><p>Thus, this system is divided into three phases:<\/p><ol><li><strong>Cargo<\/strong>: During ballasting, the <strong>water<\/strong> is <strong>filtered<\/strong> to remove particles and organisms and, after being treated, is <strong>routed<\/strong> to the ship&#8217;s <strong>ballasting system<\/strong>.<\/li><li><strong>Disinfection treatment<\/strong>: the main and fundamental technologies used for this phase are <strong>UV irradiation<\/strong> and the <strong>dosage<\/strong> of <strong>chemical treatments<\/strong> with <strong>ozone<\/strong> or <strong>chlorine<\/strong>.<\/li><li><strong>Unloading<\/strong>: it is the process of <strong>emptying<\/strong> the hull of <strong>water<\/strong>.
